7 Songs From the Tundra – Widescreen B&W Subtitle

$24.99

Anastasia Lapsui and Markku Lehmuskallio previously made numerous documentaries about the Nenets, an Inuit-like people who live at the very top of the world. Though the Nenets have no history or traditon of acting, this is a beautifully-shot anthology fiction film. The first segment, entitled “Sacrifice,” shows a wintery religious ritual involving the sacrifice of a reindeer. “The Bride” depicts traditional, pre-Revolutionary ways, including living in fur-lined teepees and herding reindeer. The story concerns a young woman’s struggle between the man she loves and the rich widower that her mother has chosen her to marry. The following four segments concern changes in the Nenet community after the Soviets take over and demand that they accept the teachings of Lenin and conform to the party line. The final section is the brief lyrical depiction of a woman singing to her child. This film was screened at the 2000 Berlin Film Festival. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi

Trotsky: Rise and Fall of a Revolutionary -

Trotsky: Rise and Fall of a Revolutionary -

$14.99

His name often falls secondary to Karl Marx and Vladimir Ilyich Lenin in popular contexts, but actually, Leon Trotsky bore every bit as much responsibility for spearheading the Russian Revolution – and (despite the eventual failure of Communism in the U.S.S.R.) retained a saint-like reputation among the Russian people that persisted for generations. Unlike John Reed, for example (who saw in the October Revolution a chaos that lacked order and systematization), Trotsky perceived the Revolution as only one in a carefully-planned series of steps that would lead to an eventual world revolution – a vision that gave him a permanent place in the hearts of many leftists. This documentary tells Trotsky’s story chronologically, making much use of archival material, period quotes, and newly-shot footage. In lieu of a reverent approach, it examines the many and varied responses to Trotsky, in order to keep him multifaceted and bring him as close as possible to contemporary audiences. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

Includes:Schastye (1935) Le Tombeau d’Alexandre (1992) Schastye No synopsis available. Le Tombeau d’Alexandre The life of filmmaker Alexander Medvedkin (1900-1989) serves as a template for exploring the history of Russia during that period, from its takeover under Lenin and the Bolsheviks, to the advent of the most hopeful part of the Gorbachev era which prefigured the demise of the U.S.S.R. As a filmmaker, Medvedkin had a motto which explains many of his works: “It is not the past that dominates us, but images of the past.” This documentary features clips from many of Medvedkin’s and his contemporaries’ films, features interviews with the man and his daughter, and celebrates his accomplishments. In an interesting sideline, he invented a camera which could be attached to a modified rifle, so that soldiers could film battle scenes. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

Nicholas and Alexandra - Widescreen

Nicholas and Alexandra – Widescreen

$14.99

Nicholas and Alexandra covers the rise and fall of the last of the Russian Romanovs. We first meet Czar Nicholas (Michael Jayston) and his German bride Alexandra (Janet Suzman) at their 1894 wedding. Though Nicholas is devoted to Alexandra, the Russian populace is less politely inclined to having a “foreigner” as their Czarina. Alexandra gains favor when she gives birth to the much-loved Prince Alexis (Roderick Noble). Alas, Alexis suffers from hemophilia, a disease which strikes every second generation of Alexandra’s family. When all conventional medical ministrations fail, Alexandra puts the fate of her son in the hands of mystical holy man Rasputin (Tom Baker, later famous for his portrayal of Doctor Who). As Rasputin’s influence and power grows, the Russian peasantry becomes more restless and disgruntled. They are now willing to listen to the speeches of such rabble-rousers as Lenin (Michael Bryant) and Trotsky (Brian Cox), who sow the seeds of revolution. Even after the murder of Rasputin, the Bolsheviks are unsatisfied: The revolution finally comes to pass in October of 1917. At first, the moderate Kerensky (John McEnery) pleads with his followers to allow the Romanovs safe passage out of Russia. But the radicals seize control, and on July 16, 1918, the royal family is summarily executed. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Theremin: An Electronic Odyssey - Subtitle

Theremin: An Electronic Odyssey – Subtitle

$12.99

Very few people would recognize the name of Leon Theremin (1896-1993) if it weren’t for the electronic musical instrument he invented around 1918. Fans of the first Star Trek series will recognize its sounds, but it was used in orchestral compositions and movies quite extensively for many decades, and even played a role in the Brian Wilson’s composition of the Beach Boys’ hit Good Vibrations. However, this documentary shows that the inventor of the forerunner instrument in electronic music is a person whose life had a lot more to offer than that. He was called “the Soviet Edison,” and was honored by Lenin before he went to work in the United States, where he developed the first electronic security system in the world for Sing-Sing Prison in upstate New York. He also was a pioneer in interracial relations, braving the strong disapproval of his peers to marry a black ballerina. He was kidnapped from the U.S. in 1938 on the orders of the vengeful and ever-paranoid Stalin, brought back to the U.S.S.R., charged with treason, and was sentenced to a gulag (forced-labor camp). However, when World War II rolled around, he was brought back into the mainstream and was put to work for the KGB, for whom he invented the first electronic “bug” for eavesdropping, for which he earned the Stalin Prize. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

Last Days of the Romanovs Tragedy at Ekaterinburg (Hardcover) Book

Last Days of the Romanovs Tragedy at Ekaterinburg (Hardcover) Book

$25.95

On the sweltering summer night of July 16, 1918, in the Siberian city of Ekaterinburg, a group of assassins led an unsuspecting Tsar Nicholas II of Russia, his wife, the Tsarina Alexandra, the desperately ill Tsarevich, and their four beautiful daughters, Olga, Tatiana, Maria, and Anastasia, into a basement room where they were shot and then bayoneted to death. This is the story of those murders, which ended three hundred years of Romanov rule and set their stamp on an era of state-orchestrated terror and brutal repression. The Last Days of the Romanovs counts down to the last, tense hours of the familys lives, stripping away the over-romanticized versions of previous accounts. The story focuses on the family inside the Ipatiev House, capturing the oppressive atmosphere and the dynamics of a groupthe Romanovs, their servants, and guardsthrown together by extraordinary events. Marshaling overlooked evidence from key witnesses such as the British consul to Ekaterinburg, Sir Thomas Preston, American and British travelers in Siberia, and the now-forgotten American journalist Herman Bernstein, Helen Rappaport gives a brilliant account of the political forces swirling through the remote Urals town. She conveys the tension of the watching world: the Kaiser of Germany and George V, King of Englandboth, like Alexandra, grandchildren of Queen Victoriatheir nations locked in combat as the First World War drew to its bitter end. And she draws on recent releases from the Russian archives to challenge the view that the deaths were a unilateral act by a maverick group of the Ekaterinburg Bolsheviks, identifying a chain of command that stretches directly, she believes, to Moscowand to Lenin himself. Telling the story in a compellingly new and dramatic way, The Last Days of the Romanovs brings those final tragic days vividly alive against the backdrop of Russia in turmoil, on the brink of a devastating civil war.

Includes:Monty Python: Live at the Hollywood Bowl (1982), MPAA Rating: R Monty Python’s Parrot Sketch Not Included – 20 Years of Python (1989) Monty Python: Live at Aspen (1998) The Life of Python, Vol. III: The Lost German Episode (1999) Monty Python: Live at the Hollywood Bowl Like The Secret Policeman’s Other Ball, Monty Python Live at the Hollywood Bowl consists of “concert” footage of the nonsensical British Monty Python troupe. This 77-minute collection of skits and blackouts features stalwart Pythoners Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin, together with semi-regulars Carol Cleveland and Neil Inness. The troupe’s stream-of-consciousness humor transfers well to the L.A. stage; even the most familiar and time-worn bits — including a TV quiz show featuring such contestants as Marx, Lenin and Mao — elicits loud laughter from the enthusiastic audience. Originally lensed on videotape, Live at the Hollywood Bowl was transferred to film for theatrical distribution. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi Monty Python’s Parrot Sketch Not Included – 20 Years of Python This is a retrospective of the British comedy troupe on their 20th anniversary. Hosted by comedian Steve Martin, many of the group’s most famous routines are showcased. Included are such gems as the Spam diner, the lingerie-clad lumberjacks, and the officials from the Ministry of Silly Walks. ~ Brian Gusse, Rovi Monty Python: Live at Aspen This film features all the surviving members of Python, gathered together to perform at a comedy festival in Colorado. Many of the group’s favorite skits are performed. Also featured are classic clips from the television program and interviews with the cast members who reminisce and engage in the banter they’re famous for. Making a special appearance is the late Graham Chapman, here in an urn. ~ Rob Ferrier, Rovi The Life of Python, Vol. III: The Lost German Episode No synopsis available.

Sweet Movie - Widescreen

Sweet Movie – Widescreen

$24.99

Like his WR: Mysteries of the Organism, Dusan Makavejev’s controversial 1974 feature Sweet Movie is firmly rooted in the principles of psychoanalyst Wilhelm Reich. In cinematic terms, this means bombarding the audience with an onset of imagery so visceral, disgusting and repellent that it “awakens” the viewer in a Brechtian manner by “short-circuiting” the audience’s reactions. Sweet Movie interweaves two narratives. One begins with a trip to the “Miss World Virginity Contest,” whose winner, Miss Monde 1984 (Carole Laure) is auctioned off to Mr. Kapital (Animal House’s John Vernon), a Texas oil billionaire with an odd perversion. Instead of deflowering her on her wedding night, he sterilizes the terrified girl’s body with rubbing alcohol and showers her in urine with his massive gold-plated penis, while an audience watches bemusedly through his bedroom window. She later escapes from her bridegroom, in a suitcase, and winds up at a wild Viennese commune whose participants indulge in public defecation and a food orgy that wraps with a massive display of gurgling, yakking, and vomiting. At the tale’s conclusion, Miss Monde shoots a television commercial that involves writhing nude in a giant vat of chocolate, with which she is completely drenched from head to toe, as the cameras roll. The second story involves a woman, Anna Planeta (Anna Prucnal) piloting a candy-filled boat down a river, with a massive papier-mache head of Lenin on the prow and a lover in-tow who is a refugee from the Battleship Potemkin. She eventually does a seductive striptease and seduces a pack of children, then makes love to her paramour in a vat of sugar and stabs him through the heart. Throughout the film, Makavejev includes shock cuts to Nazi autopsy footage and medical experimentation footage, some of which involves physical abuse of infants under the guise of “baby gymnastics.” Although it has its admirers, Sweet Movie is something of an acquired taste. And that’s putting it kindly. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

Lenin

Gog and Magog of China! Your disbelief in God earns you permanent residence in Hell Fire

Gog and Magog of China! Your disbelief in God earns you permanent residence in Hell Fire.

Gog and Magog follow what their Lords Marx, Engels, Lenin and Mao have prescribed for China.

Marx and Lenin have drawn out the way of life for the Soviets before, and now for the Gog and Magog of China, some 1.4 billions of atheist disbelievers, deniers of God and religion, rejecters of their own creator. Their abode shall be Hell Fire where they shall abide for ever. By rejecting God the Marxist ideology is founded on atheism.

Mao Tse Tong, was brought about to a crippled state before his death, has applied ardently and sincerely what his masters and lords Marx, Engels and Lenin have prescribed for China, among other peoples. The sterile experience of Marxism has abysmally failed last century and the Union of the Soviets collapsed and Marxism was reduced to ashes. Except for the Chinese ignorant Gog and Magog.

They persist stubbornly to act as if nothing happened and continue in their quest for a communist society. This, of course, gives a good pretext for Chinese parasite leaders feeding on the blood poor Chinese, maintaining their control and power over the masses. While capitalist practices are allowed fear of having the same destiny of the Soviet Union in 1991. I

n the new constitution of China in 1964 freedom of religion was publicly granted but in reality the state machine was and still is devoted to eradicate religion from the hearts of the Chinese through education and indoctrination, where state machines crush God as Lenin and His lord Marx wanted. Mao did not lose time and installed a huge operation of brain-washing eliminating religious feelings and belief from the hearts of the Chinese.

Well, he did a good job, in far as he was concern, hundreds of millions of Gog and Magog do not believe in God and lesser in religion. But there remains still to explain how the universe came about and how he earth turns with its life dimensions including the ignorant Chinese, arrogant to God who made them as they are with tilted eyes and flat nose.

The flatness of their noses must have affected their minds which came flat, void of life and void of truth by denying the reason for their existence. For who has brought the Chinese race into this world? Maybe Mao Tse Tong did? Mao made of himself God, in his red book, the Bible of the Chinese, where he wrote Mao is the red sun of the people, as if Ra, the sun God, was not enough for the Pharaohs, he is reborn in China some thousands of years after.

But now Mao is dead and gone, awaiting his judgment, just like his fellow billion of Gog and Magog; all awaiting Hell Fire where God has prepared for the arrogant boasters, as permanent residence, for those who deny Him.
