what was the quality of life in the Soviet Union in 1932?
I need to know how the money the Soviet Union recieved from the grain grown in the Ukraine improved life for the city workers in the Soviet Union.
The money gained from selling the grain went directly to pay for the machinery and equipment needed to pay for the First Five Year Plan. Workers did saw little monetary benefit. What they did see was an improvement in some areas of life, such as in health care, education and the electrification of the country.
For many Soviet citizens life was improving. The country was nearly all electrified during the 1920s, bringing light and radios to the people. The Five Year plans were met with a massive wave of enthusiasm as people wanted to start to benefit from the Revolution. People were now able to access free health-care, free education and have a job in one of the new factories which were being built.
After the Wall Street Crash, the dustbowl and during the Great Depression it look as though Communism was not just succeeding, it was flourishing. The Soviet Union did not experience the Great Depression, in fact it benefited from it. The Soviets needed machinery and experts to train the new workforce in how to use them. And with the rest of the World's economy in meltdown, they found the machines and experts in Germany, Britain and the USA.
For peasants whose land was collectivised life was very different. The kulaks - rich farmers (although it should be noted that rich mostly means richer than other farmers, not wealthy) were expelled from their lands, to Siberia or the Kazakh Steppes. And, in Ukraine 2.5 million starved to death as a direct result of collectivisation. Many peasants so resented the policy they slaughtered their livestock and destroyed their machinery rather than hand it over to the state.
The 1930s also saw the Great Purge gather pace. Initially it was designed to remove "careerists" - people who joined the party to further their careers and "wreckers" - often those Western experts brought in to train the workforce. It then became an exercise in banal, bureaucratic terror. Lists were sent to each soviet and party office, with a number on them. The local soviet or party had to send x number to the Gulag,Y number to be shot and Z number just to be expelled. The terror then turned on itself, as the secret police became a target, the head - Yezhov was executed and his followers were similarly put in the Gulag, executed or removed from office. About 2.5 million died in the process, some say between 30 & 60 million, but these ridiculous figures have been discounted, the 2.5 million figure is based on the latest research coming out of the Russian archives - not plucked out of the air by anti-soviet propagandists.
For most Soviet citizens, however, life was improving.
